My name is Samuel Sey, and I am a researcher in the field of Cancer Biology. Historically, there have been disparities in gender representation in my field, with men predominantly occupying leadership positions. However, there is a noticeable shift as women increasingly take on prominent roles. This trend extends beyond cancer biology to encompass various STEM disciplines.
Women are rightfully garnering recognition for their contributions. There have been various forms of media coverage of these leading women, and the impact this is having is outstanding. This has sparked interest among young girls in STEM pursuits previously considered male-dominated.
This year’s International Women’s Day theme, “Invest in women; accelerate progress,” resonates deeply with me. Women are special. Women possess unique qualities conducive to efficient multitasking and organizational prowess in any task. Indeed, women are a driving force for exponential progress when supported and empowered.
Throughout my academic and professional journey, I’ve encountered remarkable women in STEM. During my undergraduate studies, I had the privilege of learning from exceptional professors who demonstrated a distinctive teaching style marked by nurturing and impactful communication. I have met and interacted with renowned research scientists in my field. I can attest to the fact that their thought processes are indeed unique, and they offer a distinct yet valuable perspective on every situation.
To all young girls aspiring to be in STEM, embrace your capabilities and never underestimate your potential. With the right skills and determination, you can thrive in any field. The path to success may not always be easy, but trust in yourself and stay focused on your goals. Your dreams are valid, and you have the power to turn them into reality.
Happy International Women’s Day!
