My name is Charity Afia Antwiwaa Haleegoah, and I am a final-year student studying Industrial Engineering at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology. Previously, I served as the General Secretary of the Ghana Engineering Students’ Association (2022/2023) and currently hold the position of Trade and Technology Head in the Students’ Representative Council of KNUST (2023/2024).
Throughout my life, I have been fascinated by how science, technology, and engineering shape the world around us. Witnessing the remarkable contributions of women in these fields further ignited my passion for STEM. Figures like Grace Hopper, hailed as the “Queen of Code,” who revolutionized computer programming, inspired me with their innovation and determination, showing that gender should never limit potential.
Their stories instilled in me the belief that I, too, could be a catalyst for change in STEM. Eager to serve as a role model for aspiring young women, I embarked on my own journey, supported by family, friends, and mentors. I have faced challenges, but the legacy of these trailblazing women propels me forward, fueling my determination to overcome obstacles.
Last year, alongside fellow leaders from the College of Engineering at KNUST, I visited several girls’ senior high schools in the Ashanti Region to promote engineering and encourage young female students to explore opportunities in the field. Witnessing their enthusiasm and curiosity was incredibly rewarding. I am proud of myself to be part of this initiative, and it has reinforced my commitment to initiatives promoting diversity in STEM.
To aspiring women in STEM, I offer the following advice:
- Seek out role models and mentors. Connect with successful women in STEM who can offer guidance, support, and inspiration. Having someone to look up to and learn from can make a significant difference in your journey.
- Build a network. Surround yourself with like-minded individuals who share your passion for STEM. Join professional organizations, attend conferences, and participate in online communities. Networking can open doors to opportunities.
- Take advantage of resources and opportunities. Seek out scholarships, internships, and research programs specifically designed for women in STEM. These resources can provide valuable experiences, exposure, and financial support.
- Be confident and persistent. Believe in yourself and your abilities. Don’t let any setbacks or obstacles discourage you. Stay determined, keep learning, and never be afraid to take risks. Your unique perspective and contributions are invaluable to the field.
I am grateful for the trailblazers who have paved the way, and I am eager to contribute to the ongoing progress of women in STEM. I hope my journey inspires others to pursue their passions fearlessly, transcending barriers and making lasting impacts in the world of science and technology. Together, we can accelerate progress and make a lasting impact on the world.
