🎉Celebrating Women in STEM: Meet Theresa Owusu!🎉

Must Read

My name is Theresah Owusu, a graduate of Anointed Technical Training Institute, where I specialized in Electrical and Solar Engineering through the INVEST IN HER scholarship program by WUSC (World University Service of Canada), in partnership with GCCI (Ghana Chamber for Construction Industry). During my studies, I interned at Dext Technology Limited and now serve as an Electrical Technician at Triple Dimension Fabrication Works.

My journey in STEM has been incredibly fulfilling. After my Senior High School education, I aspired to pursue a medical career at the tertiary level, but financial constraints delayed my plans. During this time, I learned about a scholarship tailored for women interested in male-dominated trades. I got intrigued by the opportunity to learn new skills while making productive use of my time. I applied and was selected, and this began my STEM journey. What initially started as a year-long course gradually evolved into a passion, leading me to pursue engineering as my career path.

Navigating through STEM as a young woman presented its challenges, with one of the most significant being the discouragement from my family and relatives when I chose engineering over medicine. Despite their concerns and scepticism, my determination to pursue engineering remained unwavering.

Throughout my journey, I’ve undertaken various projects, including constructing CNC machines and programming robots to detect obstacles. However, one project stands out: the creation of a four-wheel chassis robot car controlled by a phone through a Bluetooth module, programmed with coding. This accomplishment filled me with immense pride and joy.

To my fellow young women interested in STEM careers, I offer this advice: your decision is not misguided. It’s an opportunity to showcase your skills and talents to the world. Stay determined, stay focused, and believe in your ability to achieve your goals. The world is waiting for you to make your mark.
